Retaining walls are one of the most effective ways to turn a challenging yard into a functional, polished outdoor space. In many Michigan neighborhoods, natural slopes, shifting soil, and seasonal freeze-thaw cycles can create erosion, pooling water, and uneven areas that limit how you use your property.
Outdoor Bliss designs and builds retaining walls that do more than hold back soil—they help shape your landscape, protect your investment, and create usable outdoor living space that feels like a natural extension of your home.
A well-built retaining wall stabilizes changes in elevation so your yard stays secure and easier to maintain. Whether your property has a steep hill, a sloped side yard, or a backyard that drops away from the patio, retaining walls provide structure and support where the landscape needs it most. They can:
PREVENT SOIL EROSION
REDUCE WASHOUTS AFTER HEAVY RAIN
HELP CONTROL RUNOFF THAT DAMAGES LAWNS AND PATIOS
CREATE NEW LEVEL AREAS FOR PATIOS, GARDENS, AND SEATING SPACES
Just as importantly, they allow you to reclaim square footage by carving out level areas for gathering spaces, play areas, garden beds, or new patio zones.
Outdoor Bliss approaches retaining walls as both an engineering solution and a design feature. Michigan’s climate presents unique challenges, from heavy rains to freeze-thaw cycles that can shift soil and stress poorly built structures.
That’s why every retaining wall we install is built with long-term durability in mind.
Our retaining walls are designed to:
By combining local Downriver expertise with careful construction techniques, we build walls that perform well through every season while enhancing the overall appearance of your property.
Retaining walls can dramatically improve how your yard functions and how you enjoy your outdoor space.
A retaining wall can transform a steep or sloped yard into flat terraces that provide space for patios, seating areas, play spaces, or gardens.
Walls hold back soil and stabilize slopes, protecting lawns, planting beds, and outdoor structures from shifting or washing away.
Retaining walls can be paired with grading and drainage systems to guide water away from foundations and landscaping.
Many homeowners are surprised by how much visual impact a retaining wall can add to a landscape.
With the right material and layout, a retaining wall can introduce clean architectural lines, define outdoor “rooms,” and create layered landscaping that adds depth and curb appeal.
Retaining walls can also blend seamlessly into surrounding outdoor features such as:
When designed together, these elements create a cohesive outdoor environment that feels intentional, balanced, and built for everyday enjoyment.

Material selection plays an important role in both the durability and appearance of a retaining wall. Outdoor Bliss works with high-quality materials that hold up to Michigan weather while complementing your home and landscape design.
A popular choice for its durability, clean appearance, and flexibility. These systems allow for both straight and curved wall designs and provide strong structural support.

Because retaining walls are structural features, proper construction is essential.
Outdoor Bliss focuses on the details that ensure long-term performance, including:
These elements are especially important in Michigan’s freeze-thaw climate, where poorly built walls can shift, bulge, or fail over time.
Our goal is to build retaining walls that remain strong, stable, and beautiful for years to come.
Every property is unique, which is why our process begins with a consultation and site evaluation.
We excavate below grade to create a trench deep enough to support the wall. A retaining wall that sits on top of soil instead of being embedded into it will eventually lean or fail.
We install a compacted crushed limestone base similar to our patio installations. The base is leveled and compacted in layers to provide structural support and prevent settling.
The first row of blocks is carefully leveled. Every row above depends on this course being perfectly straight and level.
Drainage is critical. Water pressure behind the wall is the main cause of failure. We install drainage stone and, where needed, drain piping behind the wall to relieve hydrostatic pressure.
Each block is installed with alignment and structural stability in mind. For larger walls we incorporate reinforcement techniques to increase strength and longevity.
The surrounding soil is graded to direct water away from the wall and into safe drainage areas.
Outdoor Bliss proudly designs and installs retaining walls for homeowners across the Downriver region, including:
